Kotaku is reporting on rumors that Sony is planning on resurrecting their dead robot mutt Aibo under the Playstation banner. Called Aibo PS, the dog would appear alongside a Playstation 3 user’s Home avatar, as well as being able to send video to the system or a PSP via cameras in its head. Users can control the Aibo using a PSP or the Playstation 3 controller, and the dog will even alert users when it receives an email or message, so they can check it on their system.
Best of all, if you don’t like the way you’re dog’s acting, you can download a new personality from the Playstation Store. The only way to do that with a real dog is to give it rabies, and those results have been mixed.
The latest rumors about Aibo PS come from the new issue of Stuff magazine, which rates it at 53% probability (presumably the image they provide is a mock-up), although it would confirm rumblings about a new Aibo that came up in a Kotaku interview with PaRappa the Rapper creator Masaya Matsuura. Personally, I don’t know if this move will help push PS3 or PSP sales; unless they come up with some awesome proof of concept for the dog’s connection to to the Playstation, it seems about as useful as the NES R.O.B. Right now, Aibo is somewhere between Furby and the Cylons on the creepy robot scale. Give it the ability to watch me go about my business and broadcast the footage on the internet, and it rockets right to the top of the list.
